New Delhi: The 19-year-old son of a Delhi-based industrialist was arrested on Friday - but later given bail - for critically injuring two people when, in an inebriated state, he rammed his BMW car into a motorcycle and fled the scene.
Utsav Bhasin was arrested from ISBT at Kashmiri Gate early on Friday morning while trying to flee to Chandigarh. He was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a medical examination and was interrogated at length about the accident.
Police said the car was speeding and Bhasin drove recklessly under the influence of alcohol. He holds a valid driving licence.
He was later let off on two bail sureties of Rs20,000 (Dh1,600) each from the Lajpat Nagar police station, where a case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 337 (causing hurt and endangering life) was registered against him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) H.G.S. Dhaliwal said Bhasin was driving his friend back home in the BMW car, bearing a VIP registration plate from Haryana, from a party in a restaurant of Greater Kailash-II when he hit the two bike-riders from behind near Moolchand flyover early Thursday.
The victims - Mrigank Srivastav, 29, and Anuj Singh, 25 - were returning to their rented house in South Extension after a late night movie show.
