53 others rescued after massive avalanche hits military base

Srinagar: At least 15 soldiers have been killed and 17 others critically injured after a massive avalanche of snow hit an Indian army training centre at a ski resort town in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
Qayoom Manhas, senior police officer supervising the police rescue teams, told The Associated Press that "a very timely, swift and coordinated effort on the part of the army, police and civilian authorities" managed to rescue dozens of others who were trapped.
He says 17 of those rescued needed emergency medical care and rescuers were looking for two more soldiers fear buried.
The accident occurred near Gulmarg, about 50 kilometers northwest of Srinagar, the main city in Indian Kashmir.
