Srinagar: Police said they have used tear gas and wooden batons to disperse hundreds of angry Kashmiris who attacked them with rocks, protesting the arrest of more than 100 people in the Indian portion of Kashmir.
Hemant Lohia, a police officer, said at least 12 people, including two television cameramen and one photographer, were injured as nearly 500 protesters clashed with police on Monday in the main business district of Srinagar.
Lohia said police have arrested more 100 people and charged them with disturbing public peace and attacking property during anti-India street protests over the past two weeks.
Anti-India sentiment runs deep in the Himalayan region, where rebel groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence from India or its merger with Pakistan since 1989.
