Brisbane: Hail stones the size of oranges have smashed parts of Brisbane.

The destruction was captured by citizens who quickly shared them on social media.

Australian troops are on their way to south-east Queensland after Premier Campbell Newman called on the Australian Defence Force to help cleanup after storms, labelled “the worst in a decade”.

Tweeps posted pictures and videos on social media showing how the hail smashed car windows and wreaked havoc in the city.

The hailstones were brought by destructive winds of up to 141km/h and torrential rain which battered parts of south-east Queensland on Thursday afternoon.

“I always believe in trying to amass the maximum resources as soon as possible,” Campbell said, standing before a damaged church in Woolloongabba, 2 kilometres south-east of Brisbane Central Business District.

“The trouble with these things, with these Brisbane storms particularly, is they come late in the afternoon and you’ve got the hours of darkness. It’s not ‘till the morning that you get to see the full extent of the damage,” It is not yet known how many troops will partake in the cleanup.
