Kabul: A truck packed with explosives blew up on the outskirts of the Afghan capital on Sunday, police said, in the first such violent incident in Kabul for almost three weeks.
The blast damaged a nearby gas station, said the head of the criminal investigation division of Kabul police, Farid Afzeli.
“It was trying to enter the city from the main ring road, but was identified by police who prevented it from coming into the city,” he said.
He could not confirm casualties. Acting Interior Minister General Mohammad Ayub Salangi said on his Twitter account that two people were wounded in the explosion, which happened near Kabul’s military airport.
Nato confirmed the explosion took place just before 6am.
Kabul has been quiet since early January, when a suicide car bomber attacked the headquarters of the European police training mission, killing an Afghan civilian and wounding five others.
Taliban-led insurgents have intensified their war across Afghanistan in the past year as they test Afghan security forces following the withdrawal of international combat troops.
Afghan authorities say they regularly thwart attacks on the capital.
