Dubai: Residents in Al Khawaneej will soon have a new destination to relax and rewind.

Dubai Municipality has completed the new pond park project in Al Khawaneej 1 at an estimated cost of Dh21 million and the facility will open its doors to the public soon, the civic body announced on Tuesday.

It is classified as a sustainable park with zero energy consumption as it uses solar energy to meet all of its electricity needs.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, director-general of Dubai Municipality, said in a press release that the General Projects Department developed the park’s design and features after studying the requirements of the population in the area, as the project aims to utilise the area for a pond to collect rainwater.

Built in an area of 11.5 hectares with three main entrances for the public, the new pond park consists of an office building, toilets, wooden benches and umbrellas, waste bins, as well as two children’s play areas with rubberised flooring for different age groups (two- to six-year-old and six- to 12-year-old), a football court with artificial grass, chain link surrounding the park, trees, bushes, grass areas and seasonal flowers.

The park is divided into three sections — the pond area, main area, and play areas for adults.

Designed with quality standards, it has taken into account the requirements of people with special needs in terms of choice of suitable games and ease of movement, the municipality said.

Safety factor has also been taken into consideration throughout the work as a protection fence for the public, especially children, has been installed on the perimeter of the pond to protect them from falling into the water.

The parking area can accommodate 300 vehicles while a separate entrance has been provided for maintenance works.
