Dubai: The total number of post offices in the UAE, currently, is 116. They were first set up in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, from 1963 to 64. However, the oldest standing post office that is still functional and retains its services is the Karama post office, which was renovated when the new two-wing building was constructed in the 1980s. It was originally known as the General Post Office (GPO).

Abdullah Mohammad Al Ashram, CEO of Emirates Post, said: “The Karama post office in Dubai is the oldest existing post office, built in 1975.

“Built in the 1970s, it was one of the biggest buildings in the country at the time. One of the buildings was primarily focused on sorting – it was all done manually. The headquarters were also there and the central post office [offering the range of postal services].”

Eventually as the organisation got bigger, the headquarters with all its administrative staff and the sorting centre moved to the Umm Ramool area, which is now the main hub for Emirates Post.

However, the central post office in Karama continues to actively function and serve customers.
