Giat Industries, a French defence major, has delivered more than 90 per cent of the 400 Leclerc tanks to the UAE as part of the $3.62 billion deal. The remaining will be delivered in due course.

About misinterpretations of the contract, delaying delivery, Luc Vigneron, president of Giat, said the matter had been settled amicably with the UAE Army.

"We have had very good co-operation with the UAE Army and the contract is a success," he said. The misinterpretations related to who should pay for the impro-vements of the tanks which led to delay of the deliveries.

The UAE and Giat signed the $3.62 billion deal in 1993 and deliveries began in 1995, to be completed by 2001.

The UAE, Vigneron said, was the only customer of Giat in the region for Leclerc tanks. "The UAE contract will help us in the area on future contracts."

Talks are on with Qatar and Saudi Arabia for supply of Leclerc tanks, said Vigneron. "We are optimistic about securing the contracts. It takes a long time before results are known," he said.

Giat also has an order to supply ammunition to Jordan.
