Dubai Passers-by were shocked on Sunday to see a boxed-up 52-inch LCD TV suddenly catching fire in Deira.

According to an eyewitness, the box had been lying in the loading zone of an electronics store on Baniyas Square for some time when the fire started. "I was walking towards my car in Deira when I witnessed a commotion in front of an electronics store," said Khalid Mohammad, an Emirati.

"When I got there, I saw a Sony Bravia box lying on the pavement with smoke coming out. The people there said the box suddenly caught fire. I'm really worried now because I have the same make and model at home."

Sony were not aware of the incident.

"I've never heard of any incident like this," said Mathew Mathai, Deputy General Manager for Corporate and Marketing Communication Divisions, Sony Gulf FZE. "I can't think of any reason why this happened, but we will definitely inquire about it."

Bravia is Sony's flagship brand of top-of-the-line high definition televisions.
