Dubai: Dubai Municipality yesterday launched its Safe and Healthy Summer Campaign 2010 to promote awareness and encourage Dubai residents to embrace safety measures to avoid heat stress during the summer period.

The campaign, which will last until the end of July, will focus on labourers and beach-goers as well as visitors to open spaces. The municipality is organising the campaign for the second consecutive year.

Dubai Municipality officials and other supporters of the campaign will visit different construction sites in the emirate until the end of July and raise awareness on heat stress, its symptoms, prevention methods and first-aid.

"The campaign aims to achieve cooperation between the private and government sector towards public interest in the area of health and safety of employees, as well as creating awareness on the importance of best practices in work during the summer," said Engineer Reda Hassan Salman, director of the Public Health and Safety Department at Dubai Municipality. Salman inuagurated the campaign.

"The campaign stresses the importance of commitment to laws and regulations issued by the municipality with respect to the safety of workers. We want to educate workers and all other sections of the society on the dangers of heat stress," Salman said.

He said that the campaign will cover 18 sites, including public places such as jogging tracks, shopping centres, parks, Dubai Metro stations, the emirate's beaches and other areas.

"The campaign will cover different construction sites in the city to raise awareness of workers on the means of safety and first-aid and the importance of constant intake of water and means of prevention of heat stress," Salman added.

He added that due to high temperature and humidity, excessive sweating can result in rapid dehydration, and can lead to heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
