Abu Dhabi:  The number of ID card registrations increased by more than 100 per cent during October-November 2010, compared to the same period last year.

Around 261,350 residents registered for ID cards in October and November this year compared to 115,958 registrations during the same period last year, a statement issued by the Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) said.

"It is an unprecedented achievement," Eida said.

The registrations in October this year were 136,000 — three times more than 47,500 registrations in October last year.

In November this year, registrations increased considerably to reach 125,350, compared to 68,458 in the same period last year. Eida attributed the increase in numbers to its new strategy which has eased the registration process.

Process

The pre-registration process had been transferred to around 650 typing centres across the country which fill out the new e-application form and collect the fee from the applicants.

Eida registration centres take the fingerprint and photo of the applicants.

Thanks to the new system, the average number of registrations per day has gone up to 8,000, the statement said.

The processing time taken at Eida registration centres has also gone down to five minutes per transaction. This contributed to the large number of registrations during October and November, Eida said.

Book it: Expedited process

Eida is extending its appointment based registration system across the country. Only applicants with an appointment will be able to register for the ID cards at Eida centres. The appointment details are sent to applicants via SMS, within 48 hours of them completing the pre-registration process at typing centres.
