Dubai: Dubai Courts have approved the issuance of a certificate for annulment of marriage contracts between non-Muslims.

According to Judge Salem Obaid Othman, Head of the Personal status Law Court, the courts will facilitate legal procedures for non-Muslims who want to annul their marriage after approving the wording of the annulment agreement.

The new procedure will not take more than one day.

The courts assigned a judge specialised in family agreements to the Documentation Section to have these certificates issued as long as they are referred by the family guidance section.

Time consuming

Earlier, the courts used to instruct non-Muslim couples who wanted an annulment, to lodge a lawsuit before courts. This is a process that takes at least one month.

The old procedure is still available to those who want to go through the entire court procedures in order to end their marriage.

Mokhtar Gareeb, An Emirati lawyer who specialises in Sharia-related cases, said the decision eases the litigation process and helps save litigant's effort and money. It also saves the Judicial authority's time, effort and money.

Additionally, it helps minimise the number of cases that are examined by the courts, since non-Muslim couples have the ability to go directly to obtain a certificate testifying the annulment of their marriage, he added.

Inclusive

Gareeb pointed out that the decision was already applicable to Muslims, and now it is extended to include non-Muslims.
