Abu Dhabi: A South Indian flick has become the second movie to complete 100 days of screening in the UAE, after the Hollywood blockbuster Titanic.
Mohanlal-starrer Malayalam movie Drishyam hit a century on the silver screen at Eldorado cinema in Abu Dhabi last week.
The movie was released in the UAE on January 2, and ran to packed houses across the country for several weeks. It’s still being shown at Eldorado for the afternoon show.
“This is the second movie after Titanic and the first South Indian movie to complete 100 days in the UAE,” Ebrahim Thottassery, theatre manager at Eldorado, told XPRESS.
Thottassery, who has been working in the same theatre for more than 20 years, said he had not seen such an overwhelming response for any movie screened at Eldorado.
“Even after 100 days, we have anywhere between 20 and 30 people watching the afternoon show even during weekdays,” added Thottassery.
Though the claim could not be officially verified, Dubai-based film distributing company Phars Films confirmed 1997’s Titanic was the only film to complete 100 days in the UAE.
“After Titanic, Drishyam has become the only movie to complete 100 days,” said an official at Phars who did not want to be named.
Written and directed by Jeethu Joseph, Drishyam is a family drama that has Malayalam idol Mohanlal playing a determined husband and father of two who spares no effort to protect his family when it falls on the wrong side of the law.
The movie won critical acclaim for its well-crafted plot and screenplay and is considered one of Mohanlal’s best performances.
“This is one of those rare Malayalam movies that has generated interest even among the non-Malayalee audience. Tamil, Kannada and Telugu-speaking families are still coming to watch it,” said staff at Eldorado.
