Dubai: November is the month of the moustache.

The long-vanquished pride and glory attached to the moustache will make a comeback of sorts on many a male lip as men around the world rally behind the Movember movement to create awareness of male afflictions such as prostrate and testicular cancer.

True to the old saying ‘moustache maketh a man’, Dubai menfolk too are ditching their razors. Blogger Supratik Mukherjee writes on his Manipal Dubai Student News blog that he is “Ready….Set….Grow” for Movember. The computer engineering student at Manipal University in Dubai who grew a ‘Fu-Manchu’ last year claims he raised more than Dh1,000 and vows to improve on his previous score. To encourage his peers, Mukherjee has posted pictures of the various stages of his moustache growth last year.

Many corporates and organisations are also urging men to grow handlebar, pencil, imperial, freestyle or, for that matter, any kind of black patch they fancy. And the pain is not without gain — there are some great rewards to be won.

Damsels from DM TV clad in T-shirts with slogans ‘we want you stached’, and aptly named Mo Mob, were out on the streets distributing info kits to coax and cajole clean-shaven blokes to grow their facial hair and support the cause. Men are being asked to get stached, snapped and upload their mousche-laden photos on facebook. (

The most-liked and shared photo will win valuable prizes.

The response has been more than enthusiastic with some men saying they are ready to even grow their chest hair. Layth Barzangi made this offer to DM TV through Facebook, while another Facebooker Mehdi Kedj, said he does not mind growing his hair long for Movember.

Groupon UAE offers the man who musters the best stache nothing less than a 30-minute flying session. The picture uploaded on Facebook page ( that gets the most number of likes by 6pm on December 3 will win a Microsoft flying lesson.

Metality UAE that promotes rock and metal music is also getting behind the Movember movement.

The public can vote for the best moustache on the Metality website and the winner will get free entry to the December Metal Asylum event, with their picture on the Metality UAE profile banner. At Talise Fitness and Spa in the Emirates Towers, men who sport a well-groomed moustache will receive complimentary vouchers and discounts.
