Dubai: Expatriates from India turned out in hundreds to celebrate the country's 60th Republic Day on Monday morning at the residence of the Indian consul general Venu Rajamony, who hoisted the national Flag at 8:30am.
Indians who braved traffic, lack of parking and tight security that was put in place by Dubai Police outside the residence said that they do not mind taking the trouble to be present when the Indian flag is hoisted by the consul general.
Rajamony read out Indian president Pratibha Patil's message to the nation which was followed by patriotic songs sung by school pupils.
Indians around the world were expected to celebrate the country's 60th Republic Day.
In India, troops stepped up patrols in many parts of the country and cities were on high alert as the country prepared its Republic Day celebrations.
"This year we have more policemen, more anti-aircraft guns and three helicopters ready to fly out with commandoes in case of any emergency," said police spokesman Rajan Bhagat.
Security was tight in Mumbai and police patrolled outside high-profile public places. The Indian coastguard and navy also stepped up patrols.
"We have called in for additional forces and we will be keeping an eye out," said K.L. Prasad, Mumbai police commissioner.
