Dubai: High-tech security cameras— at a cost of Dh500 million — are to be installed in the next few days in order to ensure the safety of Dubai residents.

The smart cameras are to be installed in various areas in Dubai as part of the Dh500 million plan that is to be implemented in order to monitor day-to-day traffic and criminal activity.

Director of the Criminal Investigation Division, Brigadier Khalil Al Mansouri, stated that the locations where the cameras are going to be installed will be decided by a specialised team.

He also added that due to the cameras’ advanced technology only a small number needed to be installed.

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief, has stated that a budget of Dh500 million has been designated to spread the smart cameras across Dubai.

This is because the cameras proved their worth in 2010. Cameras installed in Dubai hotels, shopping malls and the airport played an important role in detecting the 33 European and Australian suspects involved in the murder of Hamas leader Mahmoud Al Mabhouh.

Al Mansouri added that these cameras play a big role in ensuring the safety of Dubai residents — without breaching their privacy. Therefore they are installed in public places only for the purpose of monitoring traces of criminal or social activities that might pose a risk to the people of Dubai.

Al Mansouri concluded by stressing the importance of adopting new technology in the face of fighting crime.

He also stated that the security cameras installed across Dubai have already helped in arresting many criminals who were caught red-handed by these cameras.
