Dubai had the highest male to female ratio in the UAE at the end of 2001 although Abu Dhabi topped the list in terms of male population, according to official estimates.

Dubai, the second most populated emirate, had a ratio of 242 males per 100 females at the end of last year, while the ratio in Abu Dhabi stood at 234:100, the Ministry of Planning annual statistics showed.

The ratio of men for every 100 women was estimated at 176 in Sharjah, 158 in Fujairah, 149 in Ajman, 145 in Umm Al Quwain and 142 in Ras Al Khaimah. For the UAE as a whole, the ratio stood at 208:100 at the end of 2001 compared with 200:100 in 1995 and around 185:100 in 1985.

Abu Dhabi, with a population of nearly 1.36 million, was the most populous in the UAE. Dubai had around 1.02 million, while the population stood at 562,000 in Sharjah, 196,000 in Ajman, 181,000 in Ras Al Khaimah, 106,000 in Fujairah and around 52,000 in Umm Al Quwain.

The UAE's population was estimated at 3.488 million at the end of 2001, including 2.35 million males and 1.12 million females.
