While cycling, there are some emergencies riders need to always be prepared for, the most important one being a fall.

Enrique Klein, a Peruvian cycling enthusiast, said the first thing to do after a fall is to assess the damage.

“You try to evaluate the condition of the rider and degree of injury. We normally drive with support vehicles, so if it is not a serious injury, we just ask the rider to come in the car,” Klein said.

However in serious cases, ambulances may need to be called in.

For groups that cannot arrange for a support vehicle or individuals who like to ride alone, Klein suggested carrying your phone and an emergency contact information all the time.

He also stressed the need to control one’s speed while riding downhill and being on the lookout for crosswinds that can veer a cyclist off-path, leading to a crash.

“Always wear a helmet, because it absorbs most of the impact. Maintenance of the bike is very important, too. You have to make sure that your bicycle is in good working order and the tyres are inflated to the right pressure and you won’t have any major problems.”

He recommended getting your cycle for a check every 3,000 kilometres.
