According to the annual report of Sharjah Police, the number of traffic violations in 2007 was 894,719. Majority of violations were caused by cars and motorbikes.

Excessive speed detected by radar was responsible for 66 per cent of the traffic violations.

Cars parked in unauthorised areas came second with 4.4 per cent violations, 3.1 per cent was for failing to abide by traffic signals, and 2.4 per cent was for over-taking other cars from the wrong side of the road.

Sharjah Police also issued fines to motorists for failing to drive within the lanes, driving recklessly and driving with an expired car licence.

"The number of parking violations have definitely decreased in the last year as people are abiding to the rules and do not repeat their offences," said Abdul Rahman Al Mahmoud, Manager of Transport and Freightage Department, Sharjah Municipality. The department currently has four locations where residents can pay their civic parking fines.

The four current outlets are located at the head office of Transport and Freightage Department, which is near the new Fruit and Vegetable Market, the main building of Sharjah Municipality, Khalidiya area and Al Wahda Centre.

The fifth outlet is expected to open next month at Industrial Area 11. If residents opt to make their inquiries and payments in any one of the outlets, they can do so from 7am to 1pm.

If they want to make their municipality payments in the afternoon, they can pay at the head office of the transport department that is open from 5 to 9pm.

If residents want to make inquiries about traffic fines issued by Sharjah Police, they can either call the toll free number 800 3333, or visit the website www.shjpolice.gov.ae.

According to police, motorists can pay their traffic fines either through the police website and use their credit card, or they can pay in person at the Sharjah Traffic and Licensing Department located in Wasit area.
