Dubai: A sketch of a vase, a painting on glass, a photograph of a beloved pet — these are just some of the works of children with special needs from around the world that are now vying for recognition in a talent contest in Dubai.

More than 70 children with special needs from all over the world have sent their artwork to Netconnection University's Talent Contest to be adjudged on December 3.

Aimed to stimulate the creativity and development of children with special needs, the categories are paintings, photography, and hand crafts.

Netconnection University is a learning facility that offers various programmes for degree and non-degree holders. The university also holds free programmes for children with special needs in Dubai.

Building skills

"This talent contest allows children with special needs to improve their visual and motor skills. The child thinks as he chooses the colours and moves his hand, that's good for his brain," Dr. Irina Kulikova, owner of Netconnection University, told Gulf News.

For years, art therapy has been an effective tool for managing stress levels, trauma, and learning difficulties of both adults and children.

In this case, children and adults with special needs get to express themselves and their feelings in relation to their condition. Parents, too, can use the activity to bond with their child.

"When the children finish their work and see the result and the parents start to praise him, they feel happy," Dr. Kulikova said.

"This makes children with special needs feel that they are needed, that they can do something. And because they're welcome, they have a chance to improve their lives."
