Dubai: A three-year-old who nearly drowned in a hotel pool in Fujairah will be taken abroad for treatment after Shaikh Tahnoun Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Eastern Region, offered assistance to the family.

Salmeen Hadef Salem Al Ameri slipped into the adult swimming pool at a hotel in Dibba, Fujairah, last Monday. The two housemaids employed by the child’s family both jumped into the pool in an attempt to save him but both drowned.

The boy’s mother, who had left the pool for five minutes to bring food for her three children, ran back when she heard screams and gave her son cardio-pulmonary resuscitation at the side of the pool after a female tourist pulled him out from the water.

Salmeen is now in a critical condition in Tawam Hospital where doctors say his chances of survival are slim.

His mother, a resident of Al Ain, told Gulf News that she refuses to give up hope for her son, adding that Shaikh Tahnoun’s offer of help has given her something more to cling to. “We are sending my son’s medical reports abroad tomorrow, to America, Germany and China to see which country has the highest chance of therapy for the damage to Salmeen’s brain. We will get answer the same day and then we will travel in a private jet supplied with medical equipment. His Highness Shaikh Tahnoun Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan was abroad but reached the country yesterday. He will help us in the whole matter, thanks to our Shaikh.”

On the medical opinion she has received, she said: “Doctors have told us there is little hope that my son will survive as he has damage to his brain but I do not care for their point of view, I trust Almighty Allah and I hope my son will get better. Pray for my son please.”

The bodies of the two housemaids who died trying to save Salmeen are still in the country. Official papers that must be processed before the bodies can be returned to the deceased’s families in Ethiopia and Sri Lanka can only be obtained after the Eid holidays.
