Abu Dhabi: Residents in the capital can now head for a day out to the Swimming Beach at the Abu Dhabi Corniche, which has recently been expanded.

A statement sent by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City Tuesday said the newly expanded areas can accommodate up to 3,000 more people. Sections of the beach at the Corniche, specifically those areas adjoining the Family Beach, were closed last year to enable the expansion work. The expansion has now increased the total capacity of the Corniche beaches to more than 15,000 people at a time.

Much of the expanded areas of the beach are open to both individuals and families and are accessible without any fee, said Dr Badriya Al Daheri, director of community services at the municipality.

“Following the expansion, the municipality is focusing on addressing safety and security requirements at the beach. Five qualified lifeguards and instructors are available to ensure the safety of visitors,” said Dr Badriya.

Residents will have to stick to designated swimming hours at the beach between 7am and 6pm for their own safety.

Other beach facilities, which include football pitches and children’s playgrounds, are accessible till midnight.

A first aid facility has also been set up at the beach, in addition to segregated baths, showers and changing rooms.

“The period from April to November is usually the busiest at the beach, and we arrange several festivals to be held during this time,” the official said.

Nevine Al Wardani, a 20-year-old student in the capital, said she hoped the expansion would reduce congestion at the Corniche beach area, especially on weekends.

“I frequent the Swimming Beach mainly during the summer, especially as it becomes too expensive to visit hotel beach facilities every single time I want to go swimming.

“In addition, having free access to a beach with lifeguards is important for those who cannot purchase expensive club memberships,” she said.

“My friends and I also like to relax at the beach and have barbecues, and because the Corniche Swimming Beach is close to my house, we might actually plan a day out soon,” she added.
