Dubai: Patients should be the most important persons in hospitals, medical students were told by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam yesterday. The former president, currently on visit to the UAE, asked young aspiring doctors to make patients feel most comfortable at hospitals.

"The patient should feel that he is going to get cured," Dr Abdul Kalam advised. Compassion is fundamental to the medical profession, he said. He was speaking to over 200 students and faculty at the Gulf Medical University (GMU) in Ajman, after inaugurating an e-learning portal at the university.

"Whether you look at the future of a developed country or developing country or a rich man or a poor man, there is one common challenge — keeping the mind and body healthy," Dr Abdul Kalam said, urging students to explore the mysteries in the medical field.

During his visit to a hospital in Hyderabad, he found that many children were struggling to walk with an artificial limb weighing over 4 kilograms.

At the request of the head of orthopaedics at the hospital, Abdul Kalam requested his Agni missile friends about using composite material used for the heat shield of the missile to make prosthetic limbs for the polio affected patients at the hospital. "We worked on this project for sometime and came up with artificial limbs that weighs around 400 grams. As a result the children could now walk and run around."

Shaikh Dr Majid Al Nuaimi, of the Ajman royal family and Thumbay Moideen, founder president of the Thumbay group, attended the event.
