More than 200 professionals, industrialists and entrepreneurs from around the Middle East gathered in Dubai yesterday for the fifth Datamatix Women in Business Forum held in honour of International Women's Day.

The event, held at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre, focused on women's empowerment through innovation and entrepreneurship.

After the forum, Datamatix held the Middle East Women's Achievement Awards. The two events were organised by Datamatix because "women make a major contribution to the economy", said Ali Al Kamali, chief organiser and managing director, Datamatix.

"They have access to and control an enormous store of indigenous knowledge and wisdom. Therefore, despite their predominant role in the primary sectors of the economic development, women today continue to be marginalised with limited access to public and private services.

"To counter these trends, the experiences and perspectives of women need to be heard, and their capacity for economic and social contributions to the community recognised and strengthened. This event is one small step towards this novel objective."

The forum drew attention to the realities of the day-to-day life of women at work.

Additionally, it provided a platform for professionals to articulate their concerns, share experiences and ideas on the future.

Nadir Hadj Hammou, resident representative of the United Nations in the UAE, delivered the United Nations International Women's Day message.
