Ajman: A worker died in a fire that broke out in Factory Mart in the Ajman Industrial Mart on Saturday that gutted 12 shops.

Brigadier Abdul Aziz Al Shamisi, Director General of Ajman Civil Defence, said the fire that erupted around 3.45 pm on Saturday spread quickly to many shops in the area and caused the loss of one life and extensive damage to property. Firefighters from Ajman, Dubai, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain were brought in to control the the blaze.

Eyewitnesses in the area reported a thick plume of black billowing from the affected building from a distance. “We immediately took the necessary measures to prevent the fire from spreading,” an official at Ajman Civil Defence told Gulf News.

Official said that the badly burnt body of the worker was found after five hours of the incident after shop owners reported a man missing in the fire. The civil defence team recovered the body, which was then transferred to a forensic laboratory.

Ajman Civil Defence along with Ajman Police worked in tandem to control traffic movement in the area, evacuating shoppers, shop owners and workers from the risk zone. Once the situation was brought under control, the site was handed over to forensic experts to determine the origin and cause of fire.

Factory Mart, located in the industrial area, is a commercial area with dozens of shops selling clothes, perfumes, handbags and shoes in addition to household items and has been a popular site among residents and visitors, drawing substantial crowds during the weekends.
