Sharjah: Two Emirati residents died in separate road-related accidents on Thursday, Sharjah Police said.

A 30-year-old man burnt to death in a single-vehicle accident on Kalba Road on Thursday.

Later the same day, a boy was mowed down in front of his school by a vehicle police said was travelling well beyond the speed limit.

In the first accident, police said ambulance and police vehicles rushed to the scene but the man had already died due to injuries sustained in the accident. His body was transferred to a hospital in Kalba before being handed over to his family.

Traffic reconstruction efforts suggested the driver, identified as M.H.M., was speeding when he lost control of his Nissan Z vehicle, crossed a sharp curve and slammed into a lamppost before coming to a stop in the middle of the road.

The car burst into flames.

In a second unrelated incident, a ten-year-old Emirati boy died after he was struck by a speeding vehicle on Thursday afternoon, Sharjah Police told Gulf News.

The accident took place at around 12.30pm in the Al Ramtha area of Sharjah as the boy left school and was crossing the road.

The schoolboy, identified as R.A.A., suffered serious head injuries and leg fractures and was taken by paramedics to Al Qasimi Hospital at 1pm but was pronounced dead.

It is believed that there was no speed bump in front of the school, which can reduce such kinds of incidents.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to Wasit Police Station for questioning.

A police official said: “This accident is the joint responsibility between the driver, who should have slowed down in a school zone, and the school administration who left the student without supervision.”

Sharjah Police recently held campaigns to reduce speeds in school zones.
