Sharjah: An Arab boy died and his mother sustained fractures after a car swerved on to the pavement and ran over them. The accident took place in Al Jazat area in Sharjah on Wednesday night, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.

The Jordanian child, aged one year and nine months, identified as O.S., was admitted to Al Qasimi Hospital where he was pronounced dead, while his mother, identified as S.T., 30, sustained fractures to her legs.

The accident occurred when a 22-year-old Iranian female driver, identified as M.A., lost control of her vehicle while speeding and careened on to the pavement running over the toddler and his mother.

The driver, who sustained minor injuries, received treatment at a hospital before being discharged.

“The driver is in custody and is being questioned at Wasit police station,” a police officer said.

Investigation is ongoing.
