Khor Fakkan: An 18-year-old drowned on Thursday when a jet ski hit the banana boat he had rented with friends.

The crash happened in the sea near Khor Fakkan beach, Sharjah Police said. A 17-year-old was also hurt.

Four other friends were riding the banana boat and have been taken to Khor Fakkan hospital. All of them were Emirati.

Major Mohammad Ali Al Naqbi, the officer on duty, confirmed the incident.

He said a case had been registered with public prosecution as no life jackets were worn.

“The company must provide life jackets to people who want to take part in these sports activities,” Maj Al Naqbi said.

“There was no safety in this case. This case has been referred to the public prosecution.”

Records show the incident was reported to the police operation room at 6.15pm on Thursday.

All six men fell into the sea after the crash, police said. The boat owner managed to get them all to Khor Fakkan beach, from where they were taken to hospital.

Sharjah Police said the death came as a result of non-compliance with safety procedures. They urged caution when engaging in hazardous activities, particularly in water, and advised the public to always wear life jackets.
