Sharjah: Two workers are fighting for their lives after a fire broke out at Al Qasimi Hospital on Monday morning, police told Gulf News.

Police said on Tuesday that three Indian men were working in the power plant in the hospital’s new building when the blaze started.

“Two of the workers are in a very critical situation fighting for their lives.”

Police said the men were working on three engines, each with 32,000 volts of power, when one of the engines exploded.

The blaze erupted at around 8am on Monday and electricity was disconnected to the hospital, Sharjah industrial areas and Helwan for a few hours.

The Civil Defence said it seems the fire broke out when the workers tried to unplug one of the engines while it was still on. The blaze was put out in almost an hour and firefighters prevented it from spreading to hospital wards and neighbouring buildings.

Police said the workers had not taken necessary precautions. A Ministry of Labour official said workers who undertake such work must have an engineer supervising them to protect them from injury.
