Sharjah scrap yard goes up in smoke

No injuries reported in the blaze which destroyed scrap facility in Industrial Area

Sharjah: A massive fire raged through a scrap facility in Sharjah Industrial Area 10 on Monday.

Sharjah Civil Defence said no injuries were reported in the blaze that is believed to have started at around 12.55pm but the factory was destroyed.

Sharjah Police sealed off roads leading to the factory and only emergency vehicles were allowed through.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes but adjacent factories were affected. Workers in nearby premises were evacuated.

Brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence, told Gulf News there were no reports of injuries.

Firefighters from Civil Defence headquarters and Muleiha, Samnan and Al Sajaa helped in the operation.

Workers moved to a safer ground and continued to wait as teams from the Civil Defence and Sharjah Police launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Brig Al Suwaidi said the site would be handed over to forensic laboratory experts to determine the cause of the blaze.
