Sharjah: With temperatures on the rise in the UAE, Sharjah Police are advising beachgoers and marine enthusiasts to take extra care in the water to avoid fatal accidents.

Police have launched a campaign to curb the number of jet ski accidents at the emirate’s beaches following a number of such incidents reported last year.

The campaign, titled ‘Working Together to Reduce Jet Ski Accidents’, targets riders, owners and renters, and aims to raise safety awareness among community members and prevent the negative use of jet skis.

Major Rashid Yousuf Bin Sandal, director of Ambulance and Rescue Department at Sharjah Police, said jet skis are a means of enjoyment and leisure activity to reduce life’s daily stress, and not for performing stunts on the water. Endangering one’s life and that of others for a few moments of risky behaviour can transform moments of pleasure and joy into sorrow and pain, he added.

“We have repeatedly warned beachgoers to not violate safety rules,” he said.

Maj Bin Sandal said that each time an individual uses a jet ski, he should put his and others’ safety first.

The campaign included the inspection of jet skis to ensure the safety and security of the machines. A number of jet skis were confiscated from renting companies for violating safety rules.

The campaign also provides safety tips to jet ski riders and brochures are being handed out at beaches where the sport is popular.

Maj Bin Sandal urged beachgoers to follow instructions and advised riders to wear life jackets. He recommended that swimmers avoid areas with high waves and strong currents.

He urged the public to call the police on 999 or 06-5631111 if they spot anybody in danger in the water.
