Sharjah: A 30-year-old  man has been taken to hospital after apparently setting himself on fire attempting suicide following a family dispute, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning at the Emirati man's house in Al Madam area about 10am.

The Emirati man believed to have suffered first-degree burns and was taken to Al Dhaid hospital by his family.

The man was admitted to the ICU of Al Dhaid hospital where he was reported to be in critical condition and he was placed under police guard.

Police said that the man involved in an argument with his family and then the argument became heated.

The family then reported that the man poured petrol on himself and ignited himself with a lighter he was holding — after which he threatened his family that he will commit suicide.

The man allegedly tried to use his suicide bid to scare off his family and leave him alone.

No one else was injured in the incident, police said.

Police officers at the hospital reported the incident to police operation room and team from Al Madam police station visited the man and lodged complain over the incident.

Meanwhile, police summoned the family members of the man for questioning.

The investigation is ongoing.
