Dubai: The lone survivor of the horrific Salalah road accident, that killed seven members of the Al Kaabi family last month, has been transferred to Germany for treatment.

The mother of ten, who suffered multiple injuries, has been undergoing treatment at Murnau Hospital, 70km south of Munich since early this month.

Mariam Al Kaabi, who lost her husband Saif Abdullah Al Kaabi and six grown up children in the accident, has been recovering well after undergoing two surgeries.

However, according to her son-in-law Salem Al Aduwi, who spoke with Gulf News from Germany, she is still unconscious.

“My mother-in-law has been recovering well, but she is still unconscious. So far doctors have conducted two surgeries, one on her ankle and another for her respiratory system as she was facing difficulty in breathing.

“We really hope she gets well soon,” said Al Aduwi, who is by her side at the hospital.

The family is still in shock almost a month after the accident that also killed two Omanis.

“We are trying our best to be normal but it is just not possible right now. My brother Abdullah has started going to school and I’m back in Abu Dhabi, pursuing my education.

“But life is just not the same anymore,” said Humaid Al Kaabi, Mariam’s son who along with Abdullah and two sisters survived the accident.

Humaid, who is studying for his bachelors degree in aviation science from Abu Dhabi University, is having nightmares of the accident.

“On many occasions I cannot sleep at all and sometimes I get some sleep but nightmares wake me up. I’m flooded with memories of my father and siblings.

“The moment of the accident keeps flashing again and again, no matter how hard I try to be normal,” added Humaid.

The 23 year old added that going back home is more difficult as the once populated house now stands empty.

“It is difficult to stay at home. The entire place is empty, it comes to haunt me and I feel terrible, but I feel more terrible thinking about my mother, who still doesn’t know about the loss.

“I don’t know how she will react once she is back to normal and knows about the tragedy,” added Humaid.

Humaid is planning to visit his mother in Germany next week, as the doctors prepare to present their report on her progress.

The seven members who died in the accident included retired army general Saif Abdullah Al Kaabi, 57, his two sons, Ahmad Al Kaabi, 8, Mohammad Al Kaabi, 25, and four daughters Afra, 27, Hamda, 24, Fatima, 18, and Sara, 14.
