Dubai: Dubai Police rescued three labourers who fell in a petroleum refinery tank, while a fourth worker lost his life due to prolonged exposure to toxic fumes.
The Indian labourers who worked at a Petroleum Refinery tank that belong to ENOC Company in Jebel Ali fell in the tank at Monday afternoon at around 1:30 PM.
The labourers didn’t comply with safety measures issued by the company and as a result they fell in the tan k while cleaning it, said officials.
“The rescue process was very difficult for several factors such as the weight of the body, the size of the tank opening, which was small and didn’t allow for regular stretchers to get in, the darkness of the refinery tank and the lack of oxygen. But with the collaboration of the whole team, the operation took around 40 minutes to complete,” said Captain Ali Abdullah Al Qaseeb, Acting Captain in charge of Rescue Operations at Dubai Police.
Dubai Police has several specialised teams to save victims from inaccessible locations such as wells, ravines, and other dangerous areas.
“Our methods to extract a body from inaccessible areas vary. We use the air rescue team, the land rescue team, or the hard tasks rescue team. To reach such locations like a petroleum refinery tank and extract a body we had several methods ready,” Said Captain Al Qaseeb.
“Usually we tow in a regular stretcher to pull the body, but in this case the opening was too small for a regular stretcher. We then used the tripod rescue stretcher, which is easier to use in narrow passages,” Said Captain Al Qaseeb.
