Sharjah: New smart radars are being installed on Sharjah roads to catch motorists who flout the new traffic law, including not fastening the seat belt by passengers in the back seat, police said on Tuesday.

Major Mohammad Al Naqbi, director of Patrols and Traffic Department at Sharjah Police, said the new smart radars will be installed on all roads in the emirate to reduce road fatalities.

He said the radars can record many traffic violations such as tailgating and distracted driving.

“The radars can record live videos of violations and mistakes done by drivers on the roads. One of the violations that the smart radar can catch is not fastening the seat belt by the driver or any of the passengers. The radar can spot anyone in the car who has not fastened the seat belt,” Maj Al Naqbi said.

Since the new traffic law came into effect on July 1, the motorist who fails to fasten the seat belt faces a fine of Dh400 and four black points, while the driver can also be fined Dh400 for each passenger who has not fastened the seat belt.

The smart radars can spot many other violations like not leaving enough distance between vehicles and non-compliance with the mandatory routes by heavy vehicles.

“The radars can also catch drivers who are distracted by using their mobile phones or for any other reason. It can catch drivers who drive on the hard shoulders and are speeding,” he said.

Maj Al Naqbi urged motorists to follow the traffic instructions to make the roads safer.
