Fujairah: Police are questioning the relatives of the 10-year-old Emirati boy, a special-needs child, who was found wandering alone on a road in Fujairah on Monday, for their failure to report his disappearance 48 hours on.

On Wednesday, Fujairah police were able to locate the parents of the boy they after posted the boy’s photograph on their social media accounts and sought public help in identifying the boy.

The boy’s parents have been charged with neglect and investigations are ongoing.

“We are interrogating the boy’s family to determine their reasons for failing to report the disappearance of their son 48 hours after it occurred.” Lieutenant Colonel Dr Saeed Al Hassani, acting director of media and public relations department at Fujairah Police told Gulf News.

The boy has been handed over to his parents but “we will take the necessary legal procedures to protect this child, especially as he is a special-needs child,” said Lieutenant Colonel Al Hassani.

“We make sure the family will take care of him and this mistake will never be repeated,” he said.

The boy, whose named is Mohammad, was spotted by a man who saw him wandering on a road and who appeared to be in a state of panic.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Hassani told Gulf News that the issue [of who was responsible for the boy’s disappearance] has still not been clearly established as each member of the family said they assumed the boy was with another member of the family. “Each of the family members is putting the blame on the other,” he said.
