Abu Dhabi: India on Thursday said it has sought from the US a “full, transparent and expeditious investigation” into the death of an Indian fisherman who was killed off the coast of Dubai after he was shot by sentinels of a US naval ship last month.

Indian Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed told the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, that India was in touch with the governments of the UAE and the US over the incident, according to news agency reports.

He was responding to questions by Kanimozhi, a lawmaker from DMK, a regional political party in southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, over the controversial incident.

The deceased fisherman was identified as A. Sekhar. Three of his colleagues were injured in the incident. All victims are from Tamil Nadu.

Ahamed said that the US government has also conveyed that its Department of Defence has launched two separate investigations into the incident.

He also informed the parliament that the UAE government has filed a case and is conducting an independent probe into the incident.

The Indian government is in touch with the authorities in the US and UAE who are carrying out full investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident, Ahamed said.

He added that the US has also conveyed that it was exploring the possibility of providing humanitarian assistance and relief to the family of the slain fisherman.

Meanwhile the US embassy in New Delhi said it has compensated the family of a dead Indian fisherman and has given assistance to three survivors. The money will not influence the investigation into the July 16 shooting, an embassy spokesman said in a statement.

The details of the payment were worked out by the US in consultation with the Tamil Nadu government, the Indian media reported.

As Gulf News reported Thursday. talks about the compensation to the victims were going on between the US government and Tamil Nadu government directly.

M.K Lokesh, Indian Ambassador to the UAE told Gulf News that two of the injured fishermen who are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dubai will take at least another ten days to recuperate. One was already discharged from the hospital. Lokesh said the Indian mission had given a Dh5,000 allowance to the three men last week.

“If they need further assistance , we will consider it,” the ambassador said.

He also reiterated that he would seek the information next week about the ongoing investigations into the incident being carried out by the US and UAE authorities.

The US Navy said it was compelled to fire at the fishermen after they allegedly ignored the warning given them. But Dubai police said it was treating the action against the fishing boat as a case of murder. Lieutenant-General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Commander in Chief of Dubai Police, said he believes witness accounts that said the US naval vessel gave no warning before firing at the boat.
