Abu Dhabi: An illegal gathering by workers, who had refused to report to work, was brought under control in Ras Al Khaimah’s Khalifa Bin Zayed city on Saturday evening.

The workers, apparently upset over the likely suicide of one of their colleagues, had burnt down a school under construction and the office of the contracting company building it.

They also set fire to several company vehicles and portacabins. However, authorities responded promptly and brought the situation under control. Civil Defence fire brigades and other emergency teams helped in calming the situation and putting out the flames.

Officials reported that the riot started after one of the workers fell from the fifth floor of the under-construction building. An investigation has determined that the man threw himself from the ledge.

Major General Ali Abdullah Bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of RAK Police, told Gulf News, “Members of the public should refrain from spreading rumours surrounding such issues which could lead to a negative impact on the community.” His comment came after a number of rumours spread in social media about the incident.
