Dubai: Many people treated for smoke inhalation by ambulance services after a fire erupted at a residential building in Bur Dubai near the British Embassy on Thursday afternoon.

Dubai Civil Defence said that some incidents of suffocation due to smoke inhalation were reported.

“It was a minor fire in a flat on the first floor of the three-storey residential building. The fire happened at 3:21pm and firefighters reached the site at 3:27pm. The fire was under control by 3:40pm. Now its in the cooling process,” a Civil Defence spokesperson told Gulf News.

Residents of the building were evacuated to ensure their safety.

Two persons were rushed to Rashid Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, according to ambulance service.

“Most of the suffocation incidents were minor,” the Civil Defence spokesperson said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire or the extent of the damage. Civil Defence authorities said Dubai Police would investigate to identify the reason behind the fire.

“The residents are now returning to the building,” Civil Defence spokesperson added.

Emergency workers were seen attending to at least a dozen residents, mostly women and children in front of the building, according to witnesses.

At least half a dozen emergency and police vehicles were seen at the spot.
