Sharjah: Police have begun an investigation into the cause of a fire that broke out in a commercial-residential building located on Jamal Abdul Nasser Street on Sunday night.

The fire started on the first floor of the six-storey building and then spread to the upper floors, an official at Sharjah Civil Defence told Gulf News.

The fire erupted at about 11pm on Sunday and a fire brigade responded quickly to control the blaze, which rendered some 30 families homeless.

Initial investigation reveals that the window air conditioner in an apartment on the first floor caused the fire that gutted the floor completely and spread to the upper floors, each of which contained six apartments.

Firefighters from Samnan and the headquarters rushed to the scene to put out the blaze.

On Monday morning, smoke could still be seen wafting from the building. Tenants continued to stand outside the building as teams from Civil Defence and Sharjah Police probed the cause of the inferno.

Officials said that around 30 Arab and Asian families were evacuated from the building.

There were no casualties reported.
