Abu Dhabi: A fire in broke out in a warehouse, spreading to several car decoration and tyre shops in Al Musaffah’s Mina area on Tuesday, the Ministry of Interior said.

Smoke could be seen as far away as Al Reef, about 30km away from the area.

Police classified the fire as ‘moderate’ and said no lives were lost although some people were injured. The incident was reported at about 6.30am.

Colonel Abdullah Rashid Al Zaabi, acting director of the Civil Defence in Abu Dhabi, said four firefighting teams from Al Maqta and Musaffah’s M14 and M33 centres headed to the scene alongside a Quick Intervention team from Mohammad Bin Zayed city in addition to ambulances.

Authorities said that the fire was contained before it spread further.

Col Al Zaabi urged the public to abide by safety rules in buildings and other trading centres.

Major General Jasem Mohammed Al Marzouqi, General Commander of Civil Defence at the Ministry of Interior, supervised the operation while Abu Dhabi Police Air Wing and Air Support teams provided live footage of the scene.

The area was cordoned off until the fire was brought under control and police officers redirected traffic.

Al Musaffah’s industrial area has seen a number of fires over recent years of which the most significant was the 2015 incident that killed 10 workers.

The incident occurred in a two-storey structure intended to be used as a warehouse but later repurposed to illegally house over 100 men, Gulf News earlier reported.

The building was determined to be poorly equipped and did not abide by safety standards.
