Dubai: An Etihad passenger jet was forced to make an emergency landing on Tuesday morning due to what the airline said was a medical emergency.

“The flight was diverted for medical reasons,” an Etihad spokeswoman told Gulf News on Tuesday.

The condition of the person involved in the medical emergency was not released nor was the actual nature of the incident which required immediate assistance at the nearest airport.

The flight, Etihad #EY183, was en route to San Francisco when it hailed the Manchester International Airport while flying in a holding pattern at 25,000 feet saying that it needed to make an emergency landing.

The plane landed shortly after 7.30am with no injuries reported.

The Dubai-San Francisco route by Etihad is flown with the Boeing 777-200LR aircraft, said Etihad on its website updates.

Tuesday’s landing is similar to an earlier incident eight days before when an Emirates flight landed at the same airport with a passenger who died in flight.

On June 20, an elderly person, who was reported to be ill before boarding, died on an Emirates Boeing 777 passenger plane in flight from Dubai bound for Manchester.

Manchester paramedics were called to meet the plane after 7.30am at Manchester Airport but the passenger — who has not been identified — had already passed away.
