Dubai: The elderly and people with special needs in Dubai do not need to visit the police station to complete any transactions as the Dubai Police are offering a new service that will assist them at home.

Brigadier Saeed Hamad Bin Sulaiman, director of Al Rashidiya police station, told Gulf News on Tuesday that they have launched a new initiative called Ownak (Arabic for Assist You) for this purpose.

At the moment, the service is available within the Rashidiya area only.

“We launched the new initiative to provide police services to them at their home. We send two officers with [the requisite] electronic device to complete the transaction,” Brigadier Bin Sulaiman told Gulf News.

He said the initiative followed the directions from Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, to provide the best services to the public, especially for the elderly and people with special needs.

“They can call 901 to ask for the service and we will send police personnel to help them at home. They don’t need to physically come to the police station to solve a problem or complete a transaction,” Brigadier Bin Sulaiman added.

He said the service was provided for a few weeks recently to gauge the feedback before officially launching it on Tuesday.

“As many as 110 people benefited from the service and the feedback encouraged us to launch it officially. We made a list of people with special needs and gave it to our patrols for a quick response in case [the former] need anything.”

The initiative supports the national policy on empowering people with special needs and the plans to make Dubai a friendly city for them by 2020.

“We are keen to provide best services to them. We want to make their lives easier,” Brigadier Bin Sulaiman added.
