Dubai: Police are searching for a daredevil motorcyclist who drove recklessly at high speed on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road.

Images of his stunts were later posted on social media prompting people to complain to Dubai Police about the incident.

The dangerous stunts are the latest in a string of reckless driving incidents posted on social media which have prompted Dubai Police to severely crack down on an irresponsible and life-threatening behaviour on roads.

Vehicles are being impounded and convicted motorists have been ordered to perform community service hours, said a senior official of Dubai Police.

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Assistant to Dubai Police Chief for Operations Affairs, and Director of Federal Traffic Council, said that police are working to identify the reckless driver.

“It was a suicidal act as he could easily cause an accident and endanger lives of other road users. We are hunting for the driver,” Maj Gen. Al Zafein said.

The incident happened at 10pm last week near Mirdif City Centre on the way to Abu Dhabi, when two bikes moved into the left lane and one of them slowed down to give space to the reckless rider to perform his stunt. The rider drove at a speed of more than 130km/h and moved his body in a dangerous way.

The stunned motorists took pictures and videos of the stunt which continued for two minutes.

“We have radars and cameras to crack down on such kinds of reckless drivers. We will take him to task for such a suicidal act," Maj Gen. Al Zafein said.

Al Zafein said since implementation of community service for reckless drivers, such as the City Walk stunt driver, there has been a significant drop in such accidents. “Some of them have stopped performing stunts and others have been doing it outside Dubai,” he said.

Maj Gen. Al Zafein said new traffic regulations have been signed by Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, to target dangerous drivers.

He said people involved in reckless driving, endangering public lives and causing damage to public properties will be fined Dh2,000, given 23 black points and their vehicles to be impounded for 60 days.
