Bicycles confiscated by Dubai Police

Dubai: The police have confiscated 225 bicycles in one week for violating safety and security regulations when bikers rode on highways in Dubai, an official said on Monday.

Colonel Jamal Mohammad Al Bannai, deputy director of the Traffic Department in Dubai Police, said many of these bicycles were caught and confiscated from Shaikh Zayed, Umm Suqeim and Al Wasel roads where the minimum speed limit is 60kph or above.

“The confiscations were made during a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of such violations. We want to reduce the number of bicycle accidents because any accident involving bikers on highways, even if it is minor, can cause death or serious injury,” Col Al Bannai said.

Bicycles caused 17 traffic accidents in which 18 people were injured in the first six months of this year. “Riding a bicycle on a road which has a minimum speed limit of 60kph or above can confuse and distract motorists. Bicycles are not supposed to be used on such roads,” he added.

He said the police are organising campaigns to raise awareness among bicycle users about safety and guide them on the necessary safety equipment to be used while riding.
