Dubai: Dubai-based racing star Christophe Hissette has been killed in a ‘horrific’ accident during practice for the final round of the GulfSport Radical Cup at the Dubai Autodrome.

Belgian-born Hissette,29, who is widely regarded as one of the best kart drivers in the world, was air-lifted to Rashid Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, a source at the Dubai Autodrome told Gulf News.

Recounting the incident an eyewitness present at the track said: "Christophe's car was on the short straight before Turn 16, when it veered sharply to the left, hitting the wall after which it was enveloped in flames.

"The rescue service rushed to the spot in less than a minute and quickly deployed fire extinguishers.

“Paramedics helped extract Christophe, who was breathing, from the car and put him on a helicopter, which took him to Rashid Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.”

Hissette was tipped to win today’s eighth and final round of the series run in the Radical Cup UAE National Championship.

However, the event was called off.
