Dozens evacuated as fire erupts in Sharjah building

Civil defence team on the scene quickly after blaze at 25-storey City Plaza building

Sharjah: A fire erupted at a residential building on Al Tauwain Road in Sharjah on Monday night.

Dozens of families were evacuated from the 25-storey City Plaza building when the fire broke out at 9.34pm.

The blaze was brought under control by Sharjah Civil Defence.

Colonel Sami Khamis Al Naqbi, Director General of Sharjah Civil Defence, said firefighters from headquarters, Samnan and Al Mina stations joined in the effort.

The fire started in the kitchen of an apartment on the 23rd floor. The operation to put off the fire and evacuate the residents to the safety took only eight minutes, Col. Al Naqbi said.

No injuries have been reported so far. The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Police closed the road while the civil defence team worked.

Civil defence handed control of the site to Sharjah Police fire experts for further investigation.

Residents of the building returnedto their apartments after the civil defence team gave the all clear.
