Abu Dhabi A doctor's misdiagnosis of an eight-year-old Emirati boy who had an infection caused by an insect trapped in his ear led to the termination of her services Thursday in the capital.

The boy, S.A., initially came to Shaikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC)'s emergency room on Sunday after presenting a high fever with pain and redness in his right ear, a statement by the hospital revealed.

After diagnosing the boy, the attending doctor prescribed an antipyretic to reduce his temperature and sent him home but his condition did not improve.

School nurse finds dead insect

According to the statement, the boy's parents took him to a private hospital after his school nurse found a foreign object in his ear which later turned out to be a dead insect.

Internal investigations at SKMC revealed that the doctor did not follow protocol and did not conduct a thorough examination of the boy's ear when he arrived at the emergency room.

The boy is recovering from the infection and the hospital has accepted full responsibility for the incident.
