Sharjah: A 10-year-old Emirati boy was run over by  car while trying to fetch a ball from the road in Al Adhan  area in Ras Al Khaimah Sunday, an official at Ras Al Khaimah Police told Gulf News.

The boy, identified as M.R.M.M., was transported  by Ministry of Interior Air Wing  to  Khalifa Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah,then he was transferred to Rashid hospital in Dubai.

Captain Ebrahim Saif Al Mazrouai, Director of traffic and patrol section at Al Dagdaga police station in Ras al Khaimah, said Police patrols and paramedics arrived at the scene after being alerted around 4.30 pm.

Captain Al Mazrouai said the child was playing football with his friend when the accident occurred. The ball was kicked on to the road and the boy went running after it when he was hit by a speeding car.

The boy sustained serious injuries in his skull and other parts of the body, according to the medical report.

Police said the Emirati driver ,28, was driving between 40-60 km/h .

 “The driver is in custody and being questioned at Al Dagdaga police station,” an officer said.

Ras Al Khaimah Police appealed to all parents to teach their children to observe road safety rules and asked drivers to give priority to people crossing roads.

Police also urged parents to keep a watch over their children and not allow them to play in areas which pose a risk to their safety.
