Dubai: First batch of Dubai Police officers have completed their training course to launch the bicycle search and rescue patrol teams to cover tourist destinations like Jumeirah Beach, Dubai Canal, Burj Al Arab, Kite Beach and JBR.

The bicycle patrolling aims at enhancing speedy response in emergency situations in these areas.

Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, launched the new patrol as part of the search and rescue teams to achieve Dubai Police’s strategic objective of fast response in emergencies.

“These patrols will help us to reach our strategic goal of fast response. They will be on all Dubai beaches in the future to provide best police services. Bicycle patrols can reach congested areas narrow streets and beaches. They will be equipped with first-aid kits and connected to the command room in case of emergencies,” Major Gen Al Merri said.

As many as 14 police officers graduated to be part of the first batch of bicycle patrols.

Meanwhile, Brigadier Mohammad Nasser Al Razooqi, Deputy Director of Transport and Rescue Department, said the new patrols can manoeuvre easily and save more lives.

He said the officers will have a smart bicycle helmet linked to a smart app that allows for voice and video transmission, and a system that allows for group calls.

“The helmet can also send live video footage and will be fitted with a GPS tracker.

“Dubai Police wants to provide smart and classy security service to the society,” Brigadier Al Razooqi said.

The bicycles will be lightweight and have reflectors and indicators. These features will allow the patrol teams to coordinate better and allow for a speedier response to emergencies.

The app and the smart features will allow decision-makers, who are not on the ground, to make better decisions as they have access to live footage from the scene.

The graduates during a drill rescued a man who tried to commit suicide by jumping in the Dubai Canal and showed how they can response to such emergencies by using the latest equipment.
